The CatBioBlocks project is a joint effort between Aalto, VTT, and LUKE, that explores Typha (cattail) plants as an alternative biomass source to wood for the extraction of lignocellulosic building blocks for high-added-value materials applications. The cellulose and lignin fractions in the Typha stems are separated by alkaline pulping and further characterized and used to prepare lignin nanoparticles and cellulose nanofibrils. These nanoparticles are used for Pickering emulsion stabilization. The goal of the project is to prepare a tangible demonstrator of moisturizer emulsion packed in a fiber-based composite jar utilizing lignocellulosic for the emulsion stabilization and the container.
