Dr. Lukas Fliri wins the first place in the IAWS PhD Award 2025 for his groundbreaking work on cellulose chemistry and fiber engineering

Dr. Lukas Fliri has been awarded first place in the prestigious PhD Award 2025 from the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS)Â , recognizing his outstanding doctoral research in the field of wood-based materials and fiber engineering.
The IAWS PhD Award honors outstanding thesis research in wood science, wood technologies, or wood-based bioproducts at doctoral level. The competition is limited to students receiving their degrees in other than their native country. The purpose is to foster and recognize cross-national interaction.
Dr. Fliri defended his thesis, titled "Carbonyls in Cellulose: An Investigation into Formation Mechanisms, Analytical Methods, and their Consequential Properties for Fiber Engineering Applications", at Aalto University in February 2025 under the supervision of Professor Michael Hummel. The thesis explored oxidative modification of cellulose to enable advanced fiber engineering and improved routes toward bio-based carbon fibers.
As part of his doctoral research, Dr. Fliri also spent time at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), supported by the FinnCERES GoGlobal mobility program. This international collaboration strengthened the scientific foundations of his work and reflects the spirit of cross-border exchange that the IAWS PhD Award aims to promote.
Dr. Fliri’s thesis is available online at: https://urn.fi/URN:ISBN:978-952-64-2340-1.
FinnCERES warmly congratulates Dr. Lukas Fliri on this significant international recognition.
