Maria Heilala: Nanocellulose as animal-free hydrogel for biomedical research

Updated: Sep 19

Maria Heilala from Aalto University is exploring how tweaking nanocellulose with different properties can affect cell behavior in 3D cell culture!

Nanocellulose is a hydrogel that is able to mimic the 3D environment in tissues. It has been used as an alternative to current cell culture materials because of its great biocompatibility, sustainability and customizable properties!

Maria is investigating how chemical modifications of nanocellulose and hydrogel stiffness can impact cell behavior. One of the most interesting areas in her research is the utilization of nanocellulose as hydrogel for immune cell applications and breast cancer research.

This is a very important step towards a more accurate understanding of the full potential of nanocellulose as a more sustainable, ethical and better performing alternative!
