Nicolaus Bijok: Optimizing the Kraft Pulping Process

Updated: Sep 19

FinnCERES Doctoral researcher Nicolaus Bijok has an ambitious goal: to optimize the kraft pulping process for higher resource efficiency by implementing mathematical modeling.

It is basically like trying to solve a BIG puzzle.”

Combining mathematical models with a century of scientific publications, Nicolaus aims to predict the exact composition of the key components of wood after kraft pulping, ultimately making the process more efficient.

Through both experimental and theoretical research, Nicolaus is designing models to understand how different process conditions and wood samples impact the Kappa number, a standardized procedure which measures the lignin content of the final pulp. By creating a comprehensive overview, Nicolaus is helping to optimise the use of our natural resources.
